ECI Literature Prize in 2015 for Jeroen Brouwers – Telegraaf.nl

AMSTERDAM –

Jeroen Brouwers (75) is the winner of the ECI Literature 2015. He received the award for his novel “The wood,” which was named by the judges ‘magisterial’. The writer, who is in a wheelchair and is short of breath, was not present at the award ceremony in The Hague theater, but responded in the broadcast Nieuwsuur: “The money seems to me very involved.”

Jury President Andrée van Es praised all nominees, but said the jury went for “mastery”. ‘Wood’ is a touching story about the crimes and hypocrisy in the Roman Catholic church in the 50s, when humiliation and racism rampant. It is a recurring theme in the work of Brouwer. The ECI Prize is the successor to the AKO price and is good for a sum of 50,000 euros
