MADRID – the Dutchman Romano van der Dussen Thursday released around 17:00 from prison on the Spanish island of Mallorca. He has, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague leave the prison after the Spanish Supreme Court had reversed a portion of his sentence.

According to a spokesman with Ministry Van der Dussen is now transferred to a temporary shelter on Majorca.

the court overturned a conviction for sexual assault for which Van Dussen the received 6.5 years in prison. It is a rape case in Fuengirola in 2003. Moreover, the judge found him guilty of assault and robbery at the time for which he received another nine years in prison. Even those convictions will be challenged. He was since 2003 in the Spanish prison.

Van der Dussen has always maintained his innocence. He was living in Spain and was now destroyed punishment on the basis of witness statements. Research in the UK showed that the DNA of the offender matches that of the convicted British murderer Mark Dixie.

The Dutch organization PrisonLaw, dedicated to Dutch prisoners abroad, Van der Dussen is at. The organization collected a crowdfunding action money in order to get the case reopened by the Dutchman.

Wednesday PrisonLaw did not know to perform a follow-up procedures for the crimes for which the Dutchman is not acquitted. Or the organization plans to initiate a compensation procedure, she did not know.

Van der Dussen had a tough time in the Spanish prison. In May last year the Dutchman still told the Spanish newspaper El País that he was insulted and mistreated by fellow prisoners
