More than 21,000 people have signed a petition calling for the boycott of the film Stonewell. The protesters are not happy that a fictional white man starring appears to play.
The film from director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012) deals with the Stonewall riots in 1969, which beginning of the gay-formed movement in the United States. African Americans and transsexuals played a big role in it, but in the trailer that appeared online last week is the white character Danny Winters forefront of the protests.
Emmerich has asked Facebook to trust. “When the movie appears in theaters will show the public the real activists, such as Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera and Ray Castro, will be honored.” Jeremy Irvine who plays Danny, let his fans on Instagram know that there is an important role for minorities is reserved. “Although eyewitness accounts tell different versions about who then threw the first stone, is a fictional African-American transvestite in the scenes of the riots.” Gay Activist and scripschrijver Larry Kramer has also recorded for Emmerich. “Do not listen to those fools,” he wrote on Facebook. “Preventing your film seen would only hurt ourselves.”
Meanwhile, the growing support for the boycott. A petition by the Gay-Straight Alliance Network pulled within one day already 10 000 signatures. Meanwhile, after a total of four days, the count is 21,410. Another petition on the Care2 website signed a total of 15,617 times.
