Johannes Vermeer Award to filmmaker Steve McQueen – NU.nl

The jury has nominated unanimously him because as a filmmaker and video artist “continuously and excellently highlights the universal human, often in situations where oppressed people, unfree and tormented fight their dignity and keep”, so has the organizing Boekmanstichting reported Wednesday.

the British born McQueen directed in 2013 slave epic 12 Years a slave , which was nominated for nine Oscars. He won the Oscar for best film. McQueen lives in Amsterdam.

Minister Jet Bussemaker (Culture) awards the prize on November 7 in the Hall of Knights in The Hague. The award consists of a cash prize of 100,000 euros to spend on a personal project of their choice.
