Bronze statue unveiled The Potato Eaters – Telegraaf.nl

In the Brabant town of Nuenen Wednesday unveiled a bronze statue of The Potato Eaters. It is based on the famous painting Vincent van Gogh in 1885.

The picture is made by Peter Nagelkerke and stands in the Park in Nuenen. The placement was not without a struggle. A group of opponents tried last summer with a lawsuit to prevent the arrival of the image. They found the work ugly and feared disruption of tourists. The judge found the group is not interested and the municipality did not heed the objectors.

In Nuenen, Van Gogh (1853-1890) a quarter of his total oeuvre. He painted The Potato Eaters, which is considered his first masterpiece. On the dark painting is a peasant family in a stuffy room potatoes to the food. The family members are distinguished by their scrawny tronies. The painting now hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

In Nuenen was a year ago, the launch of the Van Gogh year, with the opening of a sparkling bike path along places where the artist lived. In 2015 the Netherlands stood in dozens of events, activities and festivities on the program to commemorate the 125th year of death of the famous painter
