Book Industry under attack – InCT

21-10-2015

Books – Market development

On the day it was announced that bestselling author Paulien Cornelisse itself will publish her books, wrote two co-founders of Das Can a snappy piece in the Times.

Paulien Cornelisse, known for ‘ Language is saying but really my thing “, which sold more than 500,000 copies, announced that her new book will be self-published. Cornelisse leaves her publisher, Atlas Contact, to build itself a small publishing company. Her theater they do already own. A sign on the wall for publishers perhaps.

Almost simultaneously write Toine Donk and Daniël van der Meer, co-founders of Das Mag Publisher, a letter to the editor in the Times under the title “The publishing industry must be reformed ‘ . In it they break a lance for a new way of publishing.

Donk and Van der Meer have the piece criticizing Renew the Book, according to them, this initiative is an example of the fact that the publishing industry (and specifically mean the boekenbrance) has no idea where it should go.
The criticism of Donk and Van der Meer covers several issues:

  •  They feel that publishers hail shooting by issuing too many books and authors therefore be treated badly.

  •
  •  The e-book does not break through because publishers downloading have made expensive and complicated
  •

  •  Auteursroylaties are low and kept low by publishers. A representative of a publishing house earns more a title than the author.

  •
  •  Publishers do but what in the hope that something good once in between. There is too little attention to the Individual-titles.

  •

Donk and Van der Meer want to do it differently. They feel that an author can be paid better, just as a publisher will publish fewer titles. Das Mag going to publish 15 titles per year. They want a publisher who has a relationship with its authors and who can give them a good stage, literally and figuratively. The e-book will give their publishing free with the paper version and the paper version will be designed with care and love. “The reader will know that we have on any of our books skimped our attention, love and yes, wallet.”

Three-known publishers by the newspaper asked for comment. None of them identify with the image that Van der Donk and more sketches. All three say they already spend fewer books per year

  •   Mizzi van der Plume (publisher Atlas Contact, which she would indeed find the step by Cornelisse?): it emphasizes the fact that the free imparting an e-book is still limited by what rules. She says love being competitive and welcomes the arrival of Das Mag Publisher.

  •
  •   Erik Visser (publisher De Geus) highlights the importance of international sales of your authors and also points to the e-book and looks at the cost of an e-book and the small difference with paper for that matter
  •

  •   Joost Nijsen (Podium) states that the attention Das Must be unique claims already being practiced by many publishers that way. HE recognizes the neglected psoitie of the e-book and lagging sales thereof. For the rest, he calls their piece ‘hot air designed to get actively involved with their crowdfunding campaign’ He belsuit: “This would be more bearable if they are new ideas came in book design or marketing or author counseling, but it still no trace” <. /> li>

The discussion will certainly continue … read here what Das says Mag else to do
