“Bas Heijne is a writer with a special position as a columnist and essayist, who have a huge variety of current topics and issues, writes,” according to the jury.
“He follows the contemporary culture in an engaged manner. He writes about haatvloggers and The Ring Wagner, about hollywood movies and Couperus, on European referendums and the future of the novel.”
“He writes as a thinker and think as a reader,” says the jury.
Price
The P. C. Hooft prize is one of the most important literary prizes in the Netherlands. The prize is annually alternately awarded for prose, essays and poetry. The price is an amount of 60.000 euro.
The jury was this year formed by Jacqueline Bell (professor VU university amsterdam), Kees ‘t Hart (writer, poet), Kristien Hemmerechts (writer), David Van Reybrouck (cultural historian) and Dirk van Weelden (author).
Fear and beauty
Bas Heijne has published the novels Last words (1984) and Suez (1992).
he Also gave a series of essays, of which several have been awarded or nominated for a prize. and Fear and beauty, his essay about Couperus from 2013, was rewarded with the J. Greshoffprijs.
