As the son of an architect was Van Straaten’s early contact with signs. After high school he left the Van Straaten family from Arnhem to Amsterdam to pursue an education at the Institute for Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs, the current Rietveld Academy.
One of his professors recognized in him the journalistic illustrator and made sure that after his training, he a job at The Netherlands. First as a reporter and rechtbanktekenaar, later as a cartoonist of the comic strip Father & Son,, which, in 1974, by the AVRO to a tv series was edited, and who, in 1983, the Stripschapsprijs to date.
From 1988 to 2012, he was signed for the newspaper six times per week, everyday life, a contribution about the human condition in all its facets. From 1993 he provided on a yearly basis by the scheurkalender Peter’s Zeurkalender, that for the last few years was available on the smartphone.
