The Swiss actor Buddy Elias, Anne Frank’s cousin, is deceased. He died Monday at the age of 89 at his home in Basel. This has the Anne Frank Fonds in the Swiss city Tuesday. Elias was long at the head of the fund. He was the last living direct relative of Anne.
Elias was born in the German city of Frankfurt in 1925, where Anne Frank was also the world. Elias moved in 1931 with his family to Switzerland, two years later, the Frank family to Amsterdam. Anne Frank went into hiding in the Secret Annex, but the family was betrayed and deported. Anne in Bergen-Belsen in March 1945 came to life. After the war, her diary became world famous.
“As a witness and cousin of Margot and Anne Frank put Elias tirelessly for education, human rights and the rights of children and young adults’, let the Anne Frank Fonds know. Elias campaigned “for the legacy and memory of victims of National Socialism and the fight against racism and anti-Semitism.”
Elias was after World War II a job as a clown at Holiday on Ice. He toured fourteen years with the company around the world. Then he became an actor. In 1996 he became president of the Anne Frank Foundation. He ensured that a wing of the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt hometown was dedicated entirely to the family, the Frank Family Centre.
