Overijssel cuts this year, seventy-five percent of the budget for culture. The budget drops to about fourteen million. Four years ago it was still 57 million budget. According to a survey by consultancy Berenschot.
Berenschot took the budgets of the provinces of culture under the microscope. The provinces cut back this year with a lot of culture. They collectively spend 23 percent less on arts, heritage and literature than in 2011. arts is most skimped on average about 40 percent. The differences between provinces are high. Overijssel keeps with South Holland and Utrecht, less than a quarter of its budget on art, says the consultancy. Friesland, Gelderland and Zeeland do just money.
Spending on heritage are still about the same level, but in literature is on average 21 percent cut. “The question is whether in provinces with such discounts may persist infrastructure for the arts and libraries,” says Bastiaan Vinkenburg, arts and culture sector leader at Berenschot. “It is therefore important that culture remains on the agenda,” he says with a view to forming the new coalition after the provincial elections next Wednesday.
