North Sea Jazz 2015: These were the highlights of day 2 – nrc.nl

NRC music editors throughout the weekend in Rotterdam for the sold out, fortieth edition of North Sea Jazz. On day two was the new soul star Leon Bridges big impression, Chaka Khan stopped prematurely and was The Bad Plus, Joshua Redman an absolute highlight.

The second festival was not a day of great exuberance, but of quality. NRC music critic Amanda Kuyper saw and heard while a tougher program for the average visitor “. Many new names and less accessible to a broad audience,” But that looks Kuyper just as an excellent opportunity to discover new artists. “I think your evening a success if you have seen three cool concerts.” These were the highlights of Saturday:

The Bad Plus, Joshua Redman

This act was allowed yesterday in the repetition , because in 2012 they played at NSJ. Not without reason: bobsled, funk, pop and fusion, everything was discussed at the Bad Plus Joshua Redman. For Kuyper was this act its “absolute highlight”

This was a combination of superpowers that reinforced each other properly. What was a fantastic concert. It was powerful to see how the quirky jazz trio The Bad Plus with saxophonist Redman valid as mainstream superstar, went in depth. They understood each other completely, gave each other space, circling around each other and beat melodies piece. Especially the last part, which is a ballad developed into a power play, had the force of a tornado.

Brian Blade

Say saxophonist Wayne Shorter, then follow often drummer Brian Blade, who handles his solid rhythm support. Kuyper still score a highlight of Saturday:

This show proved again how this is phenomenal drummer. Unbelievable how much energy he plays, and the fun of it splashed down. He’s really gloat when the flow is good, and he comes with the musicians to great heights. His Fellowship Band has good wind players, including saxophonist Myron Walden had a memorable solo. Brian Blade was busy; later I saw him playing the drums at the concert of saxophonist Wayne Shorter in whose band he’s been a solid value.

Paolo Nutini

“Jenny Do not Be Hasty ‘,’ New Shoes’, of which radio-friendly pop hits Nutini you might know. The Scottish singer gave an amazing show on the main stage of The Nile-hall. From Stapele was there:

“Nutini said it this way: ‘You May have guessed it but there is not much jazz here and went there. he was a semi-apologetic face at. Jazz or not, that should play no role in a person with such an excellent voice. Nutini mastered his instrument – are special, raw, colorful voice – great and was in good form, including a fantastic rendition of ‘Iron Sky’. Beautiful, own material, brought by a musician who is great in his skin, as you come to for such a festival.

Leon Bridges

His debut album Coming Home is only three weeks, and already opened the 25-year-old soul singer Leon Bridges from Texas to a packed tent Congo. From Stapele:

“His voice sounded like that of the old great soul men. On the album sounds a little too retro, live, the more his own style and it is more alive. It was stylish, sophisticated soul. Although he has just debuted, the Congo tent was super busy and congested. He had been best able to stand on a larger stage. That was in terms of quality of his music and singing certainly justified. For a genre in which the famous singers have lived through their lyrics, is still with him what clean . “

Chaka Khan

performance of singer Chaka Khan went yesterday according to plan. She announced that she would go away, but it was a disappointment for the fans when they had to stop prematurely with her appearance because of voice problems. Saul Stapele:

“She has now been in poor voice, falling for years, she argues much like her hits. Now she had to stop halfway through her show because of voice problems. Her experience band caught the lack of a sole ran drummer, backing singers, who took their time, and a guest appearance by quite gutting Jett Rebel with the song “Tell Me Something Good.” Striking: a large part of the audience continued to clap, dance and movies of a tire without frontwoman. But the music is rock, so if you ‘Is not Nobody’ commitment, surely it will be loose. “

The moment Chaka Khan her show ended :

Earlier in the day got Khan another oeuvre award from Radio 6:

Here, we look forward to tomorrow

Amanda Kuyper:

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen

Saul Stapele:

Lianne La Havas. She comes with a new album in late July with cool stuff, I’m very curious about her new show.
