To Balkt was 76 years old. He had for some time a fragile health. The poet died in his sleep.

The poet debuted in the late sixties, when he was working as a teacher. That box he said goodbye in the eighties. He won in 1973 the Herman Gorter Prize for the bundle The bulbs, the pigs.

The poet won the 2003 PC Hooft Prize for his entire oeuvre. Last year Hey hear me Ho simultaneously on the fire towers, , a book in which all his work is included
