The provinces cut back this year with a lot of culture. They collectively spend 23 percent less on arts, heritage and literature than in 2011. According to a survey by consultancy Berenschot on behalf of the Boekmanstichting, the knowledge center for arts, culture and policy.
Berenschot took budgets of the provinces of culture under the microscope. On arts is most skimped on average about 40 percent. The differences between provinces are high. So keep Overijssel, South Holland and Utrecht, less than a quarter of the art budget on, says the consultancy. Friesland, Gelderland and Zeeland do just money.
Spending on heritage are still about the same level, but in literature is on average 21 percent cut.
“It’s the question or in provinces with such discounts may persist infrastructure for the arts and libraries, “says Bastiaan Vinkenburg, arts and culture sector leader at Berenschot. “It is therefore important that culture on the agenda remains,” he says with a view to the newly formed coalitions after the provincial elections next Wednesday.
The Boekmanstichting comes in June with an analysis of the public and private spending on arts, heritage and literature and takes it with the impact of the cuts
