Ukraine may interfere in the battle to claim the treasures from four museums in Crimea, appearing last year were in the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam court ruled today that the country may intervene because Ukraine believes the rightful ownership of the objects.
The four museums in Crimea like a collection of gold objects were loaned back to the exhibition. While the objects were in Amsterdam, Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula. Then both countries demanded the objects on it.
The Allard Pierson Museum did not return the pieces. The setting feared a claim if the collection would be transferred to one of the plaintiffs. The four museums challenged the museum therefore late November to justice. In January Ukraine reported himself to the court as an interested party in the case.
The State of the Netherlands had were interested parties to ensure that there is “no place violations of obligations under international law.” The court rejected this. Netherlands has not sufficiently demonstrated that adverse effects could have the ruling, the court said.
The case continues in May, when Ukraine may respond in writing. The collection of precious objects, including a gold sword scabbard, a ceremonial helmet and countless jewels, meanwhile, remains in the Netherlands.
