Van Gogh Museum knew for years completely cut off Van Gogh ear – NU.nl

That leaves Querido Gideon Frank, press spokesman for the museum based in Amsterdam, when asked to NU.nl.

Until now it was assumed that the artist in December 1888 in a frenzied mood with his ear an edited schermes. In Van Gogh’s Ear, the true Story , Bernadette Murphy, explained that Van Gogh not only cut off part of his left ear, but throughout his ear.

The basis for the investigation of Murphy was formed by a letter from the doctor who treated Van Gogh after the famous ear incident. From drawings that Dr. Felix Rey’s letter made it can be seen that the tormented artist cut off his whole left ear.



Research

The letter was found in an American archive Murphy, did the research for her new book. The book was published Tuesday, but the museum was to communicate about five years ago by Murphy confided asking anything about the find.

The publication of the book coincides with the opening of a new exhibition , near madness , at the Van Gogh Museum.

But according Querio Frank are the findings and the book Murphy unrelated, though he would not call it a coincidence. “We primarily looked for a theme to organize an exhibition during the summer,” says Frank Querido
