Review
of horses and men ‘portrays the feelings between man and horse. The film is at times ridiculous to some, but it is also dry comical and absurd. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the work of Alex van Warmerdam
.
The contrast between paradisiacal landscapes and human pettiness is something that many filmmakers fascinates. A beautiful nature is no guarantee for communities living in harmony.
In his feature debut “Or horses and men ‘Icelandic director Benedikt Erlingsson beats beautiful coin from the opposition. The film portrays the magnificently rugged Icelandic nature a few inhabitants of a hamlet that monitor each other with binoculars constant. They are socially awkward, silent types, which do not focus on people’s emotions and feelings, but on horses.
Beloved Horses
Everyone has at least one wonderful Icelandic horse (the famous small breed), which is almost treated like a lover. It goes far. So shoot a man out of jealousy his mare death because she has let pounce by a stallion.
It sounds ridiculous, and that would be if “Or horses and men ‘was a realistic drama, but the deadpan absurdist atmosphere more reminiscent of the work of Alex van Warmerdam. If the film already has a message, it is that humans and animals are driven by the same instincts.
Animal
The fuck of a man (Ingvar Eggert Sigurosson) and a woman (Charlotte Boving) after the whole film to have gedrenteld around each other, looks as animal as in horses. That humans and animals alike, is not a major new insight.
Whether horses and men ‘then it should not have groundbreaking observations, but the deadpan acting and brilliant camera work of the Icelander Bergsteinn Björgúlfsson. It illustrates best Icelandic film of the year was declared man-and-horse drama again that the more local is a film, the more universal it becomes.
