Udo Jürgens was the man of a thousand songs – Telegraaf.nl

Sunday deceased Udo Jürgens was one of the world’s best-selling singer-composers. Over a hundred million of his records and CD’s were sold

He wrote more than nine hundred songs, including hits such as Griechischer Wein (1975) and Merci Chérie (1966). His compositions were also gratefully used by other artists, such as Matt Monro ( Walk away ) and Sammy Davis Jr. ( If I Never Sing Another Song ).

Jürgens , born in 1934 in Klagenfurt, Austria, as a toddler was already in love with music. He played harmonica, accordion and piano. Although his hearing was damaged by a slap of the leaders of the Nazi Hitler Youth, he was on his 14th to the conservatory. Two years later he won a song contest of the Austrian radio and played by itinerant dance bands.

Jürgens international breakthrough came with his third participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1966. He won Merci Chérie. Jürgens then scored hit after hit. To Japan he took the first place of the charts.

Jürgens toured for decades by the world. In 1978 he had a great commercial success with Buenos Dias Argentina , about the World Cup that year in Argentina. In 1992, he gave in Vienna at the time, largest outdoor concert of Europe. 200,000 spectators

In the nineties he took on acting again. He starred in TV series such as Das Traumschiff . In the fifties and sixties he had also played some roles.

Jürgens married three times and had four children, two of whom illegitimate offspring. Jürgens first two children John and Jenny are named after two hits. He moved from Austria to Switzerland and was there in 2007, a Swiss national, in addition to his Austrian passport.
