“Rescuers have bad experience with reporting of violence during work ‘- nrc.nl

More than a quarter of the aid workers who have reported aggression and violence at work, have bad experiences there. Especially reprisals from the perpetrators are a problem. According to a study by Foundation Help for Caregivers to willingness to report.

The foundation organized an online survey on its website, which was completed by 2,551 workers. Fire, ambulance and police employees completed the questionnaire, but also doctors, nurses and people who work for the Red Cross. Under ‘aggression and violence “foundation understands verbal aggression, threats, physical aggression, and sexual harassment.

12 percent did not know that you can do declaration

63 percent of the responders filled out the survey, but once said to be dealing with aggression while providing assistance. In almost half of the cases involved verbal aggression. 27 percent of the responders did ever return. 12 percent of the responders did not know you can do declaration of aggression during your work.

The culprit comes redress

27 percent of responders who had reported, was saying bad experiences have had. In ‘most cases’ that negative experiences are caused by the perpetrator. Jan Franx, president of Foundation Help for Caregivers:

“The rescuers instance, did the offender on the street, and were threatened. “Hey asshole, you did return!” In some cases, the perpetrators even came to the door of the social worker to seek redress. “

The foundation noted in the report that these aid workers apparently did not know that they can report anonymously.

Not prosecuted

Other negative experiences come from the fact that the suspects in some cases were not prosecuted for lack of witnesses. Police officers may, according to the foundation does declare on their own, but other caregivers should always at least in pairs on to declare for prosecution.

No support from employer

There were also social workers who make the bad experience with the declaration had been with their employer says Franx. This was mainly for workers who work for jusitie, for example in a penitiaire décor. It is a “small number” of employees that were not supported by their employer in their declaration. Franx:

“That will employer not complain, it’s part of your job to occasionally get a hit.”

Franx calls this attitude “shocking.” “A boss should stand behind you, and the inclusion of you.” When the police and health care, according to him indeed much attention here.

Threshold is high

The threshold for declaration is getting higher as Franx. So call rescuers also as reason to not report that they prefer to continue to do their work and others do not want to bother with their declaration. Board member of the Foundation Jacco Scheer said in a press release:

“Social workers provide assistance to and no one else to bother. The time they spend for reporting the crime, they can spend a lot more useful. In addition, they keep someone from work who could do other things at the time. So this is a major cultural problem “
