In the book explains De Rooy that some clichés are wrong about the Netherlands. As an example, the jury: “That Dutch are so good at polderen may have to do with the battle against water is less than the simple fact that we as a small country we can not afford too much infighting.”
De Rooy was from 1985 to 2009 professor of history at the University of Amsterdam. He received a certificate and a sum of 2500 euros. It is the second time the prize is awarded. Last year’s winner Mathieu Segers, professor of European integration at the University of Utrecht, a book about the Netherlands and the unification of Europe.
Prinsje Book Award is one of the prizes awarded in the run up to Budget Day Tuesday. MPs Wouter Great Tit (D66), Carola Schouten (Christian Union) and Elbert Dijkgraaf (SGP) on Friday won a political price. They have the jury meant a lot to parliamentary democracy, because they were involved in the autumn agreement with the government last year. Photographer David van Dam Saturday received a prize for the best political picture. He photographed minister Ronald Plasterk (Interior) after a long debate about American eavesdropping on the back seat of his official car waiting for the ride home
